The
Statue of Liberty
The Statue of Liberty, along
with the CyberNation Freedom Flag, are the central emblems
of The CyberNation of Freedom. The CyberNation
embraces the Statue of Liberty not as an emblem of the United
States, but as the predominant global symbol of freedom.
The Statue of Liberty was originally
called 'Liberty Enlightening the World' and was given to the
United States by France to honor the centennial of the United
States Declaration of Independence and the alliance of France
with the American colonies during the American Revolution. The
152 foot colossal statue was designed by the French sculptor
F.A. Bartholdi and was built using over 200 tons of copper and
iron. As with the ancient Roman depiction of Libertas, the Statue
of Liberty is portrayed as a woman. She is adorned with flowing
robes and a crown of seven spokes, symbolizing the seven continents
and the seven seas. In her extended right hand is the torch of
liberty for all to see, and in her left is a tablet with the
date of liberty, July 4, 1776, inscribed in Roman numerals. At
her feet lie the broken shackles of oppression and alien rule,
symbolizing the overthrow of tyranny.
The Statue of Liberty was formally
unveiled in New York harbor on October 28, 1886. At the unveiling
U.S. President Grover Cleveland claimed, "a stream of light
shall pierce the darkness of ignorance and men's oppression until
liberty shall enlighten the world." The Statue of Liberty
has become the embodiment of that 'stream of light' and the universal
symbol of freedom.
