‘Tis the season.

Yet again I’m angered to the point of writing. Why you may ask? Please sit back and prepared to be blasted with my story.

There I was driving my Jeep from the local hospital with my wife who had just had some treatment done. I was on my way driving her back home from her appointment and as we talked about what we would get at the Quick Stop, the Jeep died. The engine no longer was getting gas and the vehicle began its death throes. I knew I had only seconds before the power steering went out, so I brought it from the fast lane to the slow lane and aimed it toward the nearest driveway. As the power steering failed, my wife and I tried shutting down all electrical mechanisms within the vehicle i.e. stereo, heater, and lights. The vehicle coasted to a stop in a safe spot; the entrance to a local Vermont College. Here we sat with the hazard lights plainly on, and I attempted to turn the engine over. With no success the engine sputtered again and again. My wife asked what I thought might be wrong and I looked at her, very stressed out, stating that the problem was we had gotten up that morning. You see this past week had been hell. We bought a home and the pipes for our tenant upstairs had burst, drenching our bathroom below with waste water for three nights straight. I could go on about every thing else that has happened to us two weeks before Christmas but I’m sure every one else in the world has a similar story.

As we sat there the unreal happened. Two cars came behind us. Now mind you, we aren’t going any where. The Jeep is dead and the Hazards are plainly on. Instead of asking if we need a hand, instead of going around our vehicle, instead of just ignoring us like over a hundred students that passed by during this ordeal did, These SOB’s laid into their horns. I lost it. If it wasn’t for my wife to bring some sort of sanity to me I would be writing this from a cell. I mean what type of idiot-no-what type of selfish stupid ass would beep at some one else who is clearly broken down?!? What compels somebody to think so selfishly to not only fail to offer to help, but instead make things just a tad bit more stressful? After a lot of choice words to this driver from my mouth my wife decided to get out and give the Jeep a push. We got it completely out of the road and to the side of the curb and there I called our mechanic for a tow, and then called a fellow Son of Liberty for a ride from the scene of the Jeep’s demise to our home. And then our wait began.

Yet, my readers, this story is not all about the evils of men and their selfishness. Nor is it about the twenty or so cars who would drive up behind our ‘hazards are flashing’ vehicle and wait for us to advance, as if the car were in complete working condition. (I mean I love just sitting there with the hood up and hazards on for the hell of it.) No, this story is about a couple of others who aren’t in the norm of the SOB crowd. Almost immediately after getting off the phone with our mechanic, a Jamaican student by the name of George ran to my driver’s door and asked if we needed gas or a jump. Among all the fellow Americans, this man from a foreign shore ran to our aid!! Unbelievable! After I explained the situation, this kid ran to his little rusted out VW and sped over to our Jeep and popped his hood. He got his own jumper cables out and we attempted, fruitlessly, to restart my vehicle. This kid was a glimmer of hope to us and even though nothing came out of it as far as our vehicle starting up, it did restore faith to us that the world isn’t full of self-absorbed pukes.

After George had left, as sorry to that he couldn’t help us as we were that our Jeep had died, we waited for our salvation in the form of a tow truck. As we waited, though, the idiots kept coming. People would walk by and stare. Vehicles would drive up behind us and as they passed they would shake their heads as if we were idiots for breaking down where we had. We even had a school bus driver for this particular college drive up and as he did he opened his door as if he was going to ask if he could help us. I swiftly opened my window to the cold wind to see if my assumption was right only to get a cold and self centered, “When do you plan on getting towed out of here?” I just stared in amazement at the question… I looked to my wife because I was so infuriated with complete anger that I could not even speak. She grabbed my wrist and spoke stating to this SOB that a tow truck was on its way. He replied, “Good” and drove off. I mean, can you imagine!?!?

Five minutes before my buddy arrived to wait with us for the tow truck and then to give us a ride home, another man (out of the hundreds that walked by) came to our window. He was with security of the campus, and even though he was politer than the bus driver, his only intention was that we get the Jeep moved as soon as possible. He offered no, “Would you like my phone to call a tow truck?” Or, “Would you like to come to the warm office and wait for your tow truck to arrive?” Just, “When do you plan on getting towed out?”

I dealt with this man a lot better than the bus driver, only because he seemed a lot more polite when approaching us. Again though, my wife and I were just so appalled at the reaction we had gotten. I mean at this point one out of hundreds of people, in the “season of giving”, came and offered us help! I mean what an experiment this was on the niceties of our current civilization, huh???

Then another man approached and this man was yet another George, and although I did not get his name. He too offered a friendly hand. He even offered dry gas of his own to help; wow. He left our Jeep after being informed a tow truck was on its way, and my wife looked at me and stated that her faith had been restored in people. I smiled, knowing mine had too. Two people out of probably a thousand who passed us offered to help. I mean it wasn’t like this was a situation on a dark backwoods road without any human beings around. This was a situation in a school parking lot entrance where hundreds of people were in broad daylight right around lunch time.

Phenomenal.

What has this world come to?!??

Yet my fellow readers, I’m turning over a new leaf regarding this. Instead of being so bitter and angered at those imbeciles who got behind us and beeped or those hundreds of uncaring SOB’s who marched past the vehicle nonchalantly, I’m going to give thanks to George and the other unnamed man who stopped to ask us and assist us with their aid! You guys are the best, and although I may never see either one of them again, the spirit that they had, proved to us that my wife and I aren’t the only ones who will go out of our way to help one in need. There in that spot, these two men found it with in themselves on a typical wintry day in Vermont to show kindness to fellow countrymen in need.

God bless them both.

God and Country.
